Titanium is a rare metal, but actually titanium is not rare. It is the seventh most abundant metal in the earth's crust, at 0.45%, far more abundant than many common metals. However, due to the active nature of titanium, high requirements for smelting process, so that people can not get a lot of titanium for a long time, so it is classified as a "rare" metal. Minerals used for smelting titanium mainly include ilmenite (FeTiO3), rutile (TiO2) and perovskite. The ore is treated to get volatile titanium tetrachloride, and then reduced with magnesium to get pure titanium.
